Keynote 1:

THE SECRET OF SUCCESSFUL KANSEI PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

By: Emeritus Professor Dr. Mitsuo Nagamachi, CPE, CPEJ

The founder of Kansei Engineering, Mitsuo Nagamachi is a Professor Emeritus at Hiroshima University, Japan and the President of the International Kansei Design Institute, also Advisor of Japan Society of Kansei Engineering, has created more than forty new Kansei products from cars, construction machines, home appliances, cosmetics, and bridges. He received his Bachelor degree from Psychology Department, Hiroshima University, in 1958, and obtained his Master degree at the same university in 1960. In 1963, Emeritus Professor Dr. Mitsuo Nagamachi received his PhD in the field of Mathematical Psychology, also from Hiroshima University. In 1970’s he started the research of Kansei Engineering and has made MX 5 of Mazda, Liquid Crystal Viewcam of Sharp, Good-Up Bra of Wacoal and other products from the viewpoint of customer-orientation. He consults on Kansei Engineering worldwide and was a Japan Government Prize in 2008 for the foundation of Kansei Engineering. He also received many academic awards from Japan Society of Kansei Engineering, such as Kansei Engineering Publishing Award: “Kansei Innovation” in 2014, Japan Emperor Prize (for Foundation of Kansei Engineering) in 2012, Japanese Government Prize, “Science & Technology Prize (Foundation of Kansei Engineering) in 2008, and so many more. Also, in 2015, he was endorsed as the most excellent worldwide Ergonomist (No. 1) and received “Elsevier & Professor John Wilson Award” in the International Ergonomics Conference, Melbourne, Australia. Prior to these achievements, Emeritus Professor Dr. Mitsuo Nagamachi was also a visiting professor at several universities in worldwide, include Kumamoto University, Japan, Kyoto University, Japan, Iberoamericana University, Mexico, University of Oulu, Finland, University of Leeds, UK, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia, Linkoping University, Sweden, Mexico Autonomous University, Mexico, and many more. He has published more than 100 books and more than 500 articles thus far. Nagamachi founded a new technology, KANSEI ENGINEERING, in 1970, and have consulted a lot of companies, Toyota, Nissan General Motors, Ford Motors, Mazda, Mitsubishi Honda, Hyundai, LG, Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic, Daikin, Komatsu, Wacoal, Nippon Steel, Mitsubishi Heavy Industry, P&G, Johnson & Johnson, Nestle, etc. He has assisted more than 600 industries and developed more than 60 kansei products thus far.

HAPPINESS & WELLBEING

Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan Said is currently the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. He obtained his Bachelor degree in Mathematics from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom (UK) in 1979, and the Master of Science from Brunel University, UK in 1981. In 1984, he received the PhD degree in Computer Aided Geometric Design, also from the Brunel University, UK. Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan has been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of various local public and private universities, and council members of various local and international bodies including the Governing Board Member of the South-East Asia Minister of Education for the Regional Centre of Higher Education (SEAMEO-RIHED) from 1999-2008. He currently sits as a member of the Board of Directors of Asia e-University (AeU), and Chairman, Board of Directors, Kolej Universiti Islam Perlis, Malaysia. He is also a board member of the Security Commission Malaysia (SC) and also in its Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF) Board. He was a member of the National Higher Education Council (MPTN), and currently is heading the Science and Mathematics Cluster of the National Professorial Council (MPN). Also, he is a Fellow of the Malaysian Mathematical Society, Fellow Institute of Mathematical and Its Applications, United Kingdom (FIMA) and Fellow Academy Science of Malaysia (FASc). Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan received several Honorary Awards, such as HonoraryDoctor of Science from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNiMAP), Honorary Doctor of Science from Multimedia University Malaysia (MMU), Honorary Doctor of Engineering from The University of Birmingham (UOB), UK, Doctor of Business Administration (Honorary) from University of West England, UK, Honorary Doctor of Educational Leadership from Asia e-University, Malaysia (AeU), Honorary Doctor in Human Resources Management from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Doctor Honoris Causa, University of Toulouse Jean Jaures, France, Emeritus Professor, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and Honorary Doctor in Law, University of Nottingham, UK. His research interests include mathematics and computer-aided geometric design. He believes happiness at work is the key to productivity and Quality of Life, and has been working on Happiness Index for employees in Malaysian Higher Institution.

Keynote 3:

KANSEI DESIGN, 10 YEARS AT TOYOTA MOTOR EUROPE

Carole FAVART initiated a new type of Design Department in TOYOTA Motor Europe, the KANSEI Design Division. As a part of European R&D Centre, this cross-functional Division, supported by multi-disciplinary expertise, is aiming to optimize the synergies between R&D, Product planning & Design. Within Kansei Competency Centre, and the studies conducted by innovative Kansei tools and methodologies, her team is promoting cross-fertilisation towards prospective concept studies. Within Human Centred approach, TME-KD is aiming to contribute creating high emotional User Experience towards innovative mobility solutions, anticipating future customer’s needs, bridging people and technology. Since 1990, she is involved in Design education, as Teacher, Jury as well as board Member of European Kansei Group (EKG) and Kansei Engineering & Emotion Research (KEER) Committees through active collaboration with Academics. She published as Author and co-author, in books, conference papers and international journals. Also, her specialties include an expertise in various design fields, design strategy and trends analysis.
